  • ONDA002 - DJ GLC & G.I.M. PRODUCTIONS - COLOURS EP VOL1
    Record/Vinyl + Digital Album

Deceptively simple but outrageously addictive, the latest release from the Rome-based Onda Records truly is a delight for the senses. Helmed by Gianluca Marcelli aka DJ GLC, the label kicked off in 2017 courtesy of the exceptional sounds of G.I.M Productions’ ‘Rising Waves’ EP. Although following the latter might have been something of a daunting task, Onda’s sophomore release is equally enticing, with two originals (one from DJ GLC and the other from the aforementioned G.I.M productions) backed with stunning remix interpretations by two of the States’ most respected contemporary producers, Atlanta’s Byron the Aquarius and Detroit veteran Javontte.

it’s GLC’s ‘Blue’ that opens the release. A stunning deep house track that leans heavy on a bulbous baseline, it’s traditional in its methods but retains a classic feel that’s hard not to fawn over. A whimsical, stirring exercise in what lends the genre such a timeless appeal, it also serves up further proof of the producer’s own capabilities.

Up next is the no-less accomplished sounds of the aforementioned G.I.M Productions, a duo consisting of fellow Italians Cristiano Bencini and Roberto Calamia. ‘Red’ is a soulful track that’s sculpted in a Balearic vein that’s been inspired by Sade, and is the sort of sun-kissed, low-slung house weapon that’s sure to appeal to purveyors of a similar sound such as Tiger & Woods. With Bencini’s sound leaning toward more Balearic pastures and Calamia’s focused on house sounds, theirs is a production duo that emits seriously impressive and unique-sounding results.

The first of the remixes comes from sometime Sound Signature and NDATL man Byron the Aquarius, who brings his own midas touch to ‘Blue’. Cleverly keeping much of the original’s appeal intact, he strips matters back somewhat before injecting it with a clever acid line that gives it that extra zest. The curtain call comes at us from Javontte, and it’s worth noting at this point that both remixes here have been aptly chosen. Javontte’s remix of ‘Red’ might be a far cry from the original, but it too is stuffed to the brim with humid, sticky and soulful vibes, the likes of which he’s built his reputation on. A stunning, captivating release that’s sure to earn repeated plays from some of house music’s biggest players over the coming months, Onda’s latest truly is majestic stuff.
